Pilok Mine used to be one of the largest tin and gold mining neighborhood in Thailand. At the present, it becomes, however, a tourist destination to enjoy old objects and mining atmosphere remained from a few decades ago. Those who visit this place will also go to enjoy attractions around the area as well. The street leading to Pilok Mine is quite steep and rough, so it is recommended to used 4-wheeled-drive vehicle to visit this place.
After Burma was occupied by England, there are some group of Burmese people came to Thailand in order to search for tins and gold. At that time, two Thai animal hunters coincidentally found the Burmese and they also inform Thai Government. Then, in 1938, after inspected by government officers from industrial department, it was found that there are tins and tungsten available a lot in this area. Two years later, a mine was set up in this area, where it is also the first mine in Thailand.
While mining was so popular during this period, there are still Burmese people coming to searching for tins and gold. Thai soldiers had to fight with these Burmese people time to time, and certainly, there were also a lot of people died here. This is the reason why the name of this mine is Pilok; Pilok was distorted from Phee Lork, meaning to be scared by ghosts.
To visit Pilok Mine, Thong Pha Phum district, visitors need to take a Bus from Mochit 2, Bangkok, depart from 5 AM, because after get off the bus at Thong Pha Phum district, visitors have to take a yellow Baht Bus (Songthaew) at Thong Pha Phum market on 10.30 AM (not sure for the other time available). It will take about 2 hours and 20 minutes to Pilok Mine. However, it would be much easier to visit this place as a tourist group (if available).
